Geopolitics & Internet

Session Description:

What is geopolitics? As the global economy and societies become more and more integrated, geopolitics has become a framework to think, understand, act and influence diplomacy, international organizations, industry supply chains, control of global discourse, and beyond. In layman’s terms, geopolitics is probably best described as how political powers “get what they want in the world.”

So, how is geopolitics affecting and changing the Internet, and Internet governance? Despite the longstanding tradition of multistakeholderism in the Internet’s global operation and administration, as well as in its standard making bodies, national governments are increaasingly exerting influence through policy, legislation and regulation within their respective borders and beyond.

Taiwan, as one of the world’s most vibrant democracies but located in one of the most politically contentious regions in the world, faces its own unique challenges. Our speakers will discuss Taiwan’s experience in global Internet governing bodies and standard organizations, creating and sustaining the international space it deserves and needs to safeguard its own cyber resilience and development opportunities, as well as to contribute to the global Internet communities.
